Variant cases surge again in B.C., including a third new variant

B.C. health officials reported 182 new confirmed COVID-19 cases that are variants of concern, bringing the total to 576 so far.

Of the total cases, 113 are active, up from 87 yesterday. The total includes 530 of the B.1.1.7 (U.K.) variant, 33 cases of the B.1.351 (South Africa) variant and 13 cases of the P.1 (Brazil) variant.

Health officials also reported 550 new cases of COVID-19 in the province today, 11 of which are epidemiologically linked. B.C.’s cumulative total has reached 85,119.

Of the new cases, 133 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 319 in the Fraser Health region, seven in the Island Health region, 36 in the Interior Health region, 52 in the Northern Health region and three new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 4,869 active cases and 249 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, 68 of whom are in intensive care. A further 8,971 people are under active public health monitoring.

To date, 343,381 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in B.C., 86,938 of which are second doses. 

There was one new healthcare facility outbreak announced and two declared over. Active outbreaks remain at nine long-term care or assisted living facilities and eight acute care facilities.

Two people lost their lives to COVID-19 since yesterday. Health authorities also marked one year since the first person in B.C. died as a result of the virus.
